Battle of Aljubarrota

The battle of Aljubarrota which took place the afternoon of the August 14th 1385, between the troops portuguaises ordered by Jean Ier of Portugal and D. Nuno Álvares Pereira reinforced by a quota of English archers, and the army Castilian of Jean Ier de Castille reinforced in its turn by an important quota of French knights. The battle proceeded in the neighborhoods of the town of Aljubarrota, between Leiria and Alcobaça, in the center of the Portugal. In spite of the numerical superiority of the Castilians (5 times superior that Portuguese), the Portuguese left there largely victorious, putting a term at the crisis of 1383-1385, and confirming Jean Ier like king de Portugal, the first of legendary the Dynastie of Aviz.

Victorious Portugal at the time of the battle consolidated its independence with respect to Castille which had to give up its claims definitively on the Portuguese crown.

To commemorate the victory and to thank the assistance for God, Jean Ier made build the Monastère of Batalha. According to the Portuguese legend a woman called " Has will padeira of Aljubarrota" (Baker of Aljubarrota) (it had 6 fingers in each hand and killed several Castilian soldiers who deserted the combat.
