Battle of Abensberg

The Bataille of Abensberg took place the April 20th 1809, between a coalition gathering the France, the Wurtemberg (VIIIe Corps) and the Bavaria (VIIe Corps) under the orders of Napoleon I {{er}} strong of 90.000 men, and the 80.000 Autrichiens of the Archiduc Charles of Austria. With the left of the united armies, the body of the marshal Lannes pushed back the Austrians who opposed only one low resistance. In the center, the Bavarian ones underwent strong pressures, but Napoleon managed to circumvent the Austrian army by the line, and to attack it by the side, which constrained Charles of Austria to order the retirement. The Austrians lost 7.000 men (2 800 died and 4.000 prisoners); united armies, they, killed or wounded surroundings 3.000. Hopelessly trying to take again the initiative of the engagements to the Archduke Charles at the beginning of the countryside of 1809, Napoleon Bonaparte consolidated his forces, left in a state of total confusion by their preceding commander. It is in Abensberg, that he managed to start again his offensives.

Although lower numerically, the 113.000 men of Bonaparte managed to divide the 160.000 Austrians into two distinct forces.

Charles was forced to withdraw itself with the East of Eckmühl and the Hiller General in South-east towards Landshut. Each one were thereafter constrained to separately fight.
