Battance
In Agriculture and Pedology, the battance is the character of a ground tending to disaggregate and to form a crust surfaces some under the action of the rain. This phenomenon which results in a filling of the porosity of the ground opposes to the infiltration water, the air circulation, and supports the hydrous erosion. The battance can also oppose the lifting of the seedlings after germination.
To fight against this phenomenon, it is advisable to take care to maintain a rate of sufficient Humus in the ground and not to have too fine grounds.
Semi under vegetable cover makes it possible to reduce the phenomenon of battance considerably: a protective culture is planted in summer and in autumn, it is sufficiently high to protect the lifting from sowing. This culture is then crushed at exit winter when the seedlings are already well installed. Such a culture is generating of shade.
Mechanisms
With the rain, the internal pressure of the mounds increases (bubbles of air trapped in the pores which fill by capillarity) and the cohesion of the mound decreases, the impact of with the kinetic energy of the drops breaks the mounds. If there is a water excess surface, the fine ground is placed in the fine hole and cements while drying.
