Batalla de la placa del río

The Nihonshoki (, Yearly or Chronic of Japan ), also called Nihongi () was written by the prince Toneri (), Ō No Yasumaro () and other historians of the time. This work constitutes one of the rare official sources written on the history of the origins of the Japan after the Kojiki (). Both describe the divine origin of the Japanese imperial family. Its drafting was finished in 720 by pagan monks.

Compared with the Kojiki which is older, the Nihonshoki is more elaborate and is a priceless source for the historians because it comprises very complete information in connection with the old story of Japan.

Like the Kojiki , the Nihonshoki starts with mythological accounts but approaches then the contemporary historical events. The Nihonshoki concentrates on the merits and the errors of the sovereigns. It brings back the diplomatic contacts with the China and the Korea, as well as many other historical events. The Kojiki was written in Japanese transcribes with Chinese characters. The Nihonshoki , as for him, was written in Chinese as it had for the official documents of this time.

There does not exist however any original but it was reconstituted thanks to many copies, often partial.
