Batalha is a municipality (in Portuguese: concelho or município ) of the Portugal, located in the District of Leiria and the area Centers.

Geography

 
The municipality is bordering:
  • in the west and north, of Leiria,
  • in the east, of Villa Nova de Ourém,
  • in south-east, of Alcanena,
  • in south-west, of Oporto de Mós.

History

The city was rested by the king Jean I {{er}}, at the same time as started the construction of the Monastère of Batalha (which was to last of 1386 with 1517), to commemorate the victory of the Portuguese troops over the troops Castilians, at the time of the Bataille of Aljubarrota, the August 14th 1385.

The city itself was seen granting its municipal charter the March 18th 1500.
