Notre-Dame Marchette
Events were to mark the locality and one finds in the register of parish of the year 1896, the legend which makes of the Virgin of Basseux, rules in oak extremely old, including/understanding only the upper part of the body and painted colors very sharp, with the Child-Jesus on the left arm, a miraculous statue. At the saddest days of the French revolution, writes the chronicler, whereas encroached, mistress for one moment, attacked, stole, ransacked, burned the holy things, from the inhabitants of Basseux removed the statue of their beloved Owner to withdraw it from some act sacrilege. When the social storm had passed, at a date that we cannot specify, it arrived this:
“A shepherd made feed his sheep in a field located between Basseux and Monchiet. He noticed that its herd went preferably to a certain place increasingly greener, although he more often was trampled and bitten. The fact appeared to him, with reason, surprising. It made of it share with people of Basseux and one solved to dig the singular place. One was not long in discovering the statue of Notre-Dame. The Christians who had thus hidden their Owner they had died? Without any doubt, because they would have revealed the place of the saint deposit. At all events, the Virgin was brought back to the church of Basseux, but the inhabitants of Monchiet, arming themselves with an article of the Code, claimed the statue like having been found in a ground depending on their commune. Basseux refused. Monchiet was obstinated. In short that the Virgin had been given or removed, it was deposited in the church of Monchiet. But one morning, one found it with the door of the church of Basseux. The event was renewed twice, which put an end to the piles litigation and Notre-Dame accepted the name of Marchette”.
the annual pilgrimage
Every year, a famous pilgrimage begins on March 25th in the honor of Notre-Dame de Basseux. One calls upon it mainly for the children being long in walking, walking with difficulty, malingres, estropiés or crippled.
history of the Virgin
But the humble prayers addressed for the children to Notre-Dame Marchette, the more recent history made it possible to add anthems of recognition. Indeed, the church of Basseux was particularly protected during the Great War. In 1914, the trenches were only to a few hundred meters of the sanctuary of Notre-Dame. The Germans occupied Ransart, Monchy-with-Wood, the heights of River. Basseux was threatened. Prudence ordered that one put in sure place the antique and venerated statue. One descended it in a deep cellar, but it is reported that the general who ordered the Breton and Vendean soldiers confined with Basseux protested against this retirement and ordered to replace the statue in his place of honor. During all the hostilities, no shell fell on the building. Several Ex-voto and of many silver hearts testifies that one in vain does not call upon the Virgin of Basseux and thus remains long-lived in a corner of the harmonious country of Artois a devotion by which its current inhabitants join the ancestors over the vicissitudes of the wars and the revolutions.
