Bassel el-Assad

Bassel el-Assad (1961 - January 21st 1994) (Arab: باسلالأسد Basīl el-Asad) is the son of the former Syrian president , Hafez el-Assad. He died in an car accident the January 21st 1994.

As of its childhood, it was high with an aim of making some one day the heir to its father to the presidency of the Syrian republic. While being chief of the presidential guard, it carried out in the country an official program of fight against internal corruption to the mode. It appeared regularly in official receptions in military uniform, to announce the engagement of the State to the sides of the armed forces.

In 1994, Bassel, which had the reputation of an amateur of beautiful cars, dies in an accident at the wheel of its Mercedes-Benz, close to the international airport of Damas. Hafez el-Assad then chooses to make of different sound wire, Bachar, its heir. This one, medical student, then made his speciality in London in ophthalmology. Held distant until there from the exercise of the capacity, it did not have political experiment.

The worship of the personality of Bassel, organized by the mode baassist, did not cease with its death. The Syrian media then called it, “Bassel the martyr” (in Arab: باسلالشهيد, Bāsil aš-Šahīd) and of many places and streets bear its name today. Bassel also has statues with its effigy in many Syrian cities, and it is often represented in public posters at the sides of his father and his brother.

It is buried in a mausoleum with Qardaha, at the sides of his father in his birthplace.
