the Basques is a regional Municipalité of county of the province of Quebec, in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent, created on April 1st 1981. Its chief town is the town of Three-Spray. It is made up of 12 municipalities: 1 city, 5 municipalities, 5 parishes and 1 territory not organized. Its current prefect (2005) is André Leblond, his substitute is Aliette April.
The MRC borrows its name from the island with the Basques located opposite Three-Spray where the presence of fishermen Basques between 1580 and 1630 is attested.

Demography
The MRC of the Basques is one of the least populated MRC of Quebec and one of poorest. Primarily rural territory, its population growth stopped in 1961 to start a marked decline. Between 1961 and 2006, the MRC of the Basques lost 42% of his population. Certain villages of the back-country have sudden demographic losses even more important. The weight of the population of the MRC in the Québécois total was reduced by three between 1961 and 2006, passing from 0,36% to 0,12%.
