Basler Herbstmesse

The Basler Herbstmesse is a Fun fair annual which is held in the town of Basle, in Suisse.

History

The tradition of this fair goes back to the Moyen-âge when, on the opinion of the Concile of Basle, the emperor Frédric III grants to the town of Basle in 1471 the right to hold two large trade fairs per annum, one before Pentecost and the other in autumn, before the day of the Saint Martin's day.

Whereas the fair of spring knew only one short existence, that of autumn was held each year without interruption, becoming thus the oldest fair of most important Suisse and between Stuttgart and Milan.

Unfolding

Called of Herbschtmäss or more simply of Mäss in Swiss German, this festival is held, as its name indicates it, each year at the beginning of the autumn ( Herbst meaning German autumn in ).

The fair traditionally begins last Saturday from October and is announced at midday crushes by the bells of the church of Martinskirche which opens the celebrations on six places different from the city. It is also the signal of the opening of the stalls of the market of the Petersplatz and the fair to the Mustermesse Basel. During the sixteen following days, crowd invades the districts of the center of the city to benefit from the stands, the horse-gears and the salesmen of candies and sugar refineries placed close to the roundabouts.
