Basin algéro-of Provence
Name of the Western basin of the the Mediterranean located between France, the Corsica , Sardinia, Spain and Algeria. Its pits go down until 3255m close to Algiers. It was the point of passage, narrow, between France and its colonies of North Africa.
Its central part between Sardinia and the Balearic Islands names Mer of Sardinia, her north-western arm Gulf of Lions and her north-eastern arm Mer Ligurienne.
This basin opened 35 million years ago, as a marginal Mer formed by-effect of the Subduction of the Plaque apulienne under the block sardo-Corsican.
