Basilosaurus

The basilosaurus was antiquated and carnivorous Cetacea from 18 to 25 m length for a weight estimated of 60 tons with the adulthood. He is the ancestor of the modern whales. He lived between -45 and -36 million years, towards the end of the Eocene , and had two more small legs, inherited an ancestor terrrestre, being used from now on to maintain the body of the male during the coupling.

The basilosaurus male measurement on average 21 meters length; the female is approximately 18 meters long.

Lifestyle

The basilosaurus was a carnivore driving out the Cetacea or the fish of size considered to be sufficient for its meal, is the equivalent of a dolphin. The female basilosaurus was in gestation over one period estimated at 6 months, and at the same time gave birth only to one small. It is possible that it could, in the event of malnutrition, to cause an abortion to increase its own chances of survival. The small one was probably educated with hunting by his/her mother, behavior common to all the Cetacea.

Their low level of rejection of excrements a long time impassioned the paleontologists of the whole world.

Fossils

The fossils of the basilosaurus were discovered for the first time in Alabama and in the the Mississippi ( Basilosaurus cetoides ) with the the United States during the 19th century. The paleontologist Richard Harlan who had the first bones of basilosaurus initially believed that it was about a skeleton of alarming specter, this is why he classified it among the reptiles, his name ending in " saurus" , meaning Reptile. Other kinds were unearthed with the the Eastern Sahara in particular in Egypt ( Basilosaurus drazindai ) and with the Pakistan ( Basilosaurus isis ). This error was detected a few years later, but its name was not changed. Richard Owen, after having lengthily studied the fossils to him, recognized a mammal, which he baptized " Zeuglodon ".
