The common basil ( Basiliscus basiliscus ) is a Espèce of Lézard S of the family of the corytophanidés which meets with the Nicaragua, to the Costa Rica, with the Panama, the North-West of the Ecuador, in Colombia and with the Venezuela.

It is a Reptile terrestrial chestnut-green, sometimes drawing on brown-orange, with transverse bands more or less marked, as well as a fine clear edge line on first half of the body. It has long a tail, legs with the large fingers (especially back legs) and developed an enough head. The adult males present a rigid peak on and under the head, as well as a more flexible peak on all the back and part of the tail. It is one of the rare species parthenogenic of this family and even of this infra-order (Kuhn & Schmidt, 2003).

The Subspecies B.B. barbouri meets more specifically in Colombia. Its name is dedicated to the herpetologist and American ornithologist Thomas Barbour (1884-1946).
