Basic tunnel of the Mount of Ambin
The basic Tunnel of the Mont of Ambin is the major work of the project of line of railway between Lyon and Turin. The first work of recognition started French side in 2002 with the excavation of the descending shaft of Modane, then of Saint Martin the Door (2003) and Praz (in 2005). However the tunnel should not open before 2020/2022.
Characteristics
This Tunnel of more than 50 km will be, with its opening, the third larger tunnel railway in the world behind the basic Tunnel of Gothard (57 km) and the Tunnel of Seikan (54 km), and right in front of the Channel tunnel (50 km).
The gates are located French side on the commune of Saint-Jean-with-Maurienne and Italian side in Valley of Suse.
The cost of the Franco-Italian common part (of Saint Jean de Maurienne with the valley of Suse) is estimated at 7,6 billion euros (value brought up to date in January 2006 on the basis of initial layout in Italy), carried by French, Italian and European financings.
The Work of art could be borrowed jointly by goods trains, Rail expressway and TGV. It meets a rather strong opposition in the Val of Suse, where work is shown to cause releases of dust of Amiante and Uranium (see the article NO TAV).
