Basic research
The basic research gathers work of Scientific research not having an economic purpose determined at the time of work. One in general opposes the basic research to the Applied research. This distinction is delicate to establish because many projects are at the border between the two. Many major innovations were developed in a logic of basic research, and would not have been developed within a framework of applied research; for example, technologies related to the Laser , or the Theory of chaos.
The basic research not having by definition not an economic prospect , it is almost exclusively the fact of Laboratoire S of research and is seldom the partnership object with the Industrie or the services. However, it is frequent that the research undertaken within the framework of an application, sometimes in partnership with Entreprise S, can have fundamental implications - or that the Enquiring S implied in the project use of their academic freedom to jointly undertake their research in direction of the application and a more fundamental research on the same subject. The border between these two types of research is thus generally rather fuzzy.
