Base Line

See also: base Line (homonymy)

It is starting from the base line that the widths of the maritime zones under the jurisdiction of a Coastal state are measured.

The base line is normally consisted the Laisse basic sea (limit of the zones always covered by the sea whatever the tide, in the absence of exceptional weather-oceanographical phenomena); in certain cases (presence of islands close to the littoral, very cut out coast…), basic sea (" leaves it; base line normale") by a right base line can be replaced, composed of segments, not deviating from the head office of the coast and uniting points located on basic sea leaves.

The water located in-on this side right base line is the interior Eaux.

Definition according to the site of the SHOM:

The base line

The base line is the limit from which the limit of the territorial sea is calculated. The normal base line is leaves it basic sea, such as it is indicated on the sea charts to large scales officially recognized by the Coastal state (i.e. charts of the SHOM for France). In certain cases, (coasts deeply cut out or bordered of small islands, deltas, sufficiently deep bays) of the right base lines, not deviating from the head office of the coast, can simplify the limit of the territorial sea (with like consequence increasing the water surface interior of the Coastal state). The choice of these lines requires a precise and argued study of the various possibilities.
