Bart Bok

Bart Jan Bok (Hoorn, April 28th 1906Tucson, August 5th 1983) was a Astronome néerlando - American.

He had been born with the Netherlands and had formed in the Université S of Leyde and Groningue. In 1929, it married his/her colleague Astronome the doctor Priscilla Fairfield Bok and for the remainder of their lives, they collaborated narrowly in their astronomical work.

Of 1929 with 1957, it worked with the Université Harvard. He was then director of the Observatoire of the Mount Stromlo in Australia during nine years, before turning over to the the United States as director of the Observatoire Steward. He became American citizen in 1938.

In 1975, Bok corédigea the report Objections to Astrology (The Humanist, 1975) (objections with astrology), which was supported by 186 professional astronomers, astrophysicists and other scientists, including 19 prizes winner of the Nobel Prize. The report was published in The Humanist and was at the origin of the creation of the Committee for the Scientific Investigation off Claims off the Paranormal, of which it was one of the founding members.

Bart Bok was a personality extremely popular in the world of astronomy, known for its kindness and its humor, like for its capacity introducing alcoholic drinks. The Astéroïde (1983) Bok was named on its behalf of alive sound. At the time of the ceremony announcing the reward, he thanked UAI to have given him “a small ground place where I will be able to settle and live”. He took part à/et or directed several groups to observe the solar eclipses, the last close to Irkoutsk to Siberia during the summer 1980.

Bok died of a heart attack in its residence of Tucson in Arizona.
