Barry J. Marshall
Barry J. Marshall (September 30th 1951 with Kalgoorlie, Australia -) is a Médecin Australia N and a professor of clinical Microbiologie to the Université of Western Australia. It is especially known to have proven that the bacterium Helicobacter pylori is the cause of the majority of the Ulcère S of stomach, putting an end to several decades of medical doctrines which affirmed that the ulcers were caused by the Stress, the spiced food and an excess of acidity. Jointly with J. Robin Warren, this discovery was worth the to him Nobel Prize of physiology and medicine in 2005.
Biography
It obtained its diploma in medicine and pharmacology with the Université of Western Australia in 1974. A few years later, in 1981 with the royal Hospital of Perth, it met Robin Warren, a Pathologiste interested in the intestinal problems. Together, they studied the presence of Bactérie S helicoid during gastric infections. In 1982, they carried out the culture of Helicobacter pylori and developed the assumption that these bacteria led to the Ulcère S and the Cancer of the stomach. The assumption H. pylori was made fun by the medical community, which did not believe that bacteria can survive in an environment as Acide as the Estomac. With an aim of encouraging the community to accept their assumption, Marshall swallowed a test-tube of culture and developed in less than one week a gastric ulcer, which he then cured with Antibiotique S. In 1984, with the Hôpital Fremantle, Marshall confirmed one of the Postulats of Koch on H. pylori and H. gastritis . By afterwards, whereas he worked with the Université of Virginia, he popularized his research with the the United States, before turning over in Australia in 1997. He occupied a pulpit of research at the University of Western Australia of 1998 with 2003 (see).
In 2005, Marshall and Warren receive the Nobel Prize of physiology and medicine “for the discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in the gastric problems and the ulcers of the stomach” (free translation “for to their discovery off the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease”).
Professor Marshall continues his research on H. pylori and leads a laboratory of Molecular biology to the University of Western Australia.
