|} The barrosa and the cachena are bovine races Portuguese. The cachena is an alternative smaller, high on average mountain.
Origin and manpower
They belong to the crossing of the fawn-coloured branch of the brown Rameau with the fair branch of the fair Rameau and red. They result from the District of Villa Real, a poor area of agriculture. The climate is hot and dry in summer, cold and wet the winter. The grounds are sloping and not very fertile. The cachena is also high in the south of the Galicia, in border zone.
Elles is high only in their area of origin, but weak manpower are in fall: hardly more than 100 for the cachena and around 700 for the barrosa. They are due to the competition of more intensive races and the not planned crossings. A plan of maintains races in danger of extinction is set up at Portugal. The herd book of the barrosa date of 1985, that of the cachena was open in 1990.
Morphology
They wear a fawn-coloured dress to blonde to the brown nuances more sunk on the garrot. Their mucous membranes are clear, but their muzzle is dark. They carry long horns in quadrant.
La cow cachena is one of the smallest races in the world. It measures 1,10 to 1,17 on average with the garrot for 390 kg. The bull measures 1,20 to 1,25 per 550 kg.
The barrosa is a little larger. It measures 1,15 m for the cow and 1,25 m for the bull, for respectively 400 and 700 kg.
Aptitudes
Traditionally, they was useful animals for all: milk, meat, labor force. Only the meat is really developed today. She is recognized besides like great quality. The cachena produces a little rich milk, scented by its environment wild and emphasized well by its transformation into cheese: " brandas da cachena".
Ce is races of great rusticity, adapted well to their area. They are high in the open air. They nourish branches when the grass is too rare. The cows are good mothers and raise their calf well. The size of the animals could be an adaptation to a hostile environment. A small cow has less of needs and recovers periods of food shortage better.
