In an original manner, current Barrois recovers what was the Western part of the territory that occupied the Gallic tribe Leuques. One thus finds several establishments major such as the Oppidum of Boviolles or that of Fains-Véel, both located at the accesses of the Ornain. Below the fortified town of Boviolles, was established as from the first century before our era the town of Nasium.

Same time, one finds traces with Bar-le-Duc of a human installation, then named Caturige.

The Middle Ages

Captive fact in Bruges, Henri III was obliged to sign, in 1301, the famous treaty by which he recognized liege man of king de France for the part of his States de Barrois located at sleeping of the Meuse, towards the kingdom of France; such is the origin of Barrois driving and nonmoving Barrois. For this time, all that the counts and dukes of Bar had on left bank of the Meuse has been looked like concerning the crown of France.
