Raoul Barré (1874-1932) is a Canadian organizer (montréalais), having worked in New York and Montreal.

Innovations

Fundamental contribution of Raoul Barred to animation, it conceives and uses two inventions which simplify and accelerate the work of the organizer while improving quality of the movement.
  • the Slash System is a process former to the cellulos, which consists in cutting out an opening in the sheet of decoration and placing this one on the elements to be animated. If the slash system, in spite of its effectiveness, fell in disuse, the second invention constitutes a true revolution.
  • the Rule with tenons: Barred with the idea of a rule on which it fixes two pins. The sheets of, perforated in the upper part or lower, are immobilized. She is also named rule with pins or Peg bar. Combined with the slash system, this invention stabilizes the succession of the images and allows a more detailed decoration.

Achievements

It is at the origin of a studio of New Yorkean animation in 1910, as well as Educational Art and Film Co. off Montreal.

It carried out and produces two whimsical series: the Animated Grouch Chasers and the Phables. The first consists of animated sketches integrated into an action in catches of real sights, while the second is an adaptation of a cartoon of Tom E. Powers, which carries an ironic glance on contemporary manners. The stripped style of its cartoons evokes the drawings with the Caran d' Ache of the years 1890.

In 1916, it joins Charley Bowers with which it turns the Mutt & Jeff until they scramble. Barred the city leaves to take refuge in the New Yorkean countryside, remains with Montreal and Paris, and returns to New York in 1926 by uniting the team of Pat Sullivan, producer of the Felix the Cat.

Of return to Montreal, in 1927, Raoul Barré launches out in innovating and daring projects. Reached of a cancer, he dies into 1932 before being able to carry out them in the long term. The files which it leaves testify to its spirit of avant-garde.
