Barrayar (original title Barrayar ) is a novel of Science-fiction of the American writer Lois McMaster Bujold, published in 1993. It belongs to the Saga Vorkosigan of which it constitutes the third following shutter the chronological order of the universe of the '' Saga Vorkosigan ''.
The account proceeds at one key time of the history barrayarane because the former emperor Ezar Vorbara died and the new emperor, Gregor, are yet only one child. Regency is ensured by Aral. Nobility VOR of Barayar is in her majority faithful to the empire, but certain a number of faction want to benefit from the minority of the emperor to seize the capacity. It is thus a disturbed and dangerous period. Aral from its station in the government is particularly exposed. And if Cordélia is not the particular target of any faction, its place near the regent puts it in great danger. The events which result from this will have a great repercussion on the life of future the Vorkosigan Miles since they are directly responsible for its physical malformations.
Finally, the events will culminate with the revolt of part of the nobility and the Civil war which will follow.
On the other hand, Barrayar is a green planet, glaze of seas, lakes and rivers. Only a continent is populated, there is thus place so that the population can increase. It is the heart of an empire militarist, authoritative, technologically late, violent, machist, intolerant with strong feudal tendencies. This empire is in full change for fully integrating the galactic company, but it remains much of way to traverse. The cultural shock is violent. Cordélia will refuse to accept them and rather than this to fold in Barrayar it decides that it is Barrayar which must change and to adapt to it. On its level, it will do what it can to reach this objective. But as a woman of the regent and tutor of the emperor, it is on a true change that it engages her new planet.
By certain side, Beta is not without pointing out America, but America idealized without its defects. Resemblance accentuated by the fact that Beta speaks a language derived from the English. Contrary, Barrayar can easily be identified with the old Russian Empire (or the USSR) or German. Much patronym is or resembles Russian names (Piotr, Kosigan, Gregor) and the particle of nobility VOR is not without pointing out German Von. Moreover, V decides F, with allemande. The languages Russian and German are besides two of the official languages of the empire, with the French who is the language of an old empire and the Greek who plays here the part of the oppressed cultural minority. The parallel with the USSR will be specified in the following novels when the Empire catches up with its adversaries in space technology while remaining very late in other fields or with the description of the very Stalinist architecture which is characteristic of the time. Evocations of last will be added there: the fatal war sudden by Barrayar during the Cétagandane invasion is not without recalling the German invasion during the second world war whereas on its Beta side was the subject of no enemy attack on its territory (just like the United States).
However it does not seem that the author wanted to make a criticism of the empires. By considering the evolution of Barrayar in the other novels, which under its influence will try to correct its defects it is more probable than it is described a catastrophic basic state by putting all together than it could imagine the worst for an civil society in order to better highlight future progress. It is certainly not a chance so in this postponed company, between all the district, it is that of Vorkosigan which is more late and which will mark the most spectacular successes.
