Barranquilla

Barranquilla is a city and the capital of the department of Atlántico in Colombia. It is the fourth of the country by size of the population. The city was officially founded on April 7th 1813, but the site is inhabited since 1629. This industrial town is located close to the mouth of the river Magdalena on the Caribbean Sea. The tropical climate is hot and wet there. The city counts some 1.700.000 inhabitants, with more than 2.800.000 inhabitants by counting all the agglomeration.

The city has several nicknames, the puerta of oro of Colombia (the gold door of Colombia), because historically Barranquilla was one of the most important ports of Colombia; Arenosa (the sandy one), because in winter fine sands of the river are raised by the breeze; and Curramba bleated it , for its music.

Education

Barranquilla counts several universities: Universidad del Atlántico, like public university, and of private universities like Universidad del Norte, Universidad Autónoma del Caribe, Free Universidad, Universidad San Martin, Universidad Metropolitana, Universitad Simon Bolivar, between most important.

Town planning

It is the city where is held celebrates it Carnaval of Barranquilla which was declared like Oral and Immaterial Patrimoine of Humanity by UNESCO.

The streets of Barranquilla all are numbered. Will square which is the streets in the North-South axis are numbered by order ascending of West in Is, increasing in direction of the river. The holds are numbered by order ascending of the South towards North. Certain streets (will square or fixes) have the same number, to differentiate them, their number is followed of a letter. It thus has Will square it 51, Carrera 51B, Carrera 51C, etc (51A Will square could exist, but it is not the case).

Public transport is managed by about fifteen companies of bus.

Sport

The Atlético Junior is the team of Football of the city since 1948 and plays in the first division of the Colombian football league. El Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez, is there or the team plays these matches in residence since the May 11th 1986.
