Barnacle tit

The Bernache tit ( Branta sandvicensis ) is a Palmipède pertaining to the family of the Anatidae and the subfamily of the Anserinae.

Description

The Barnacle tit ( Branta sandvicensis ) measurement between 56 and 71 cm. Its plumage is brownish except for the cap and the side of the neck which are black and the remainder of the neck and of the head which are yellowish. The fingers are only partially webbed.

Habitat

This species is originating in the islands Hawaii where she attends the slopes of the volcanos with a sparse vegetation. It is a sedentary species.

Biology

It is the most terrestrial species of Oie; it is nourished exclusively on the fields of lava. The barnacle tit generally lives in families, the birds gathering only during the moult.

Populations

This species was saved extinction by the breeding in captivity. In 1952, it did not remain that about thirty wild birds because of hunting and the predation exerted by introduced species: Dog S, Cat S, Mongoose S. The breeding in captivity in particular by Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust with Slimbridge and the fight against the predatory ones made it possible to bring back the wild population to more than one thousand of individuals thanks to the lâchers of birds born in captivity.
