History

In 1136, a papal bubble mentions the church of Barlieu : " Ecclesiam de Barlocco " . The parish, placed under the term of German Saint, is initially with the nomination of the abbot of Saint-Satur. A priory, called " the chaplaincy of Barlieu" , is joined there. Old strengthened borough comprising an enclosure, the village passes to the house of Sancerre in 1152. In 1190, before its departure for the Crusades, the count Etienne I {{er}}, Count de Sancerre, grants the inhabitants of Barlieu " habits of Lorris" , which is then a closed city of walls, independent, where are held of the markets and the fairs.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the seigniory of Barlieu is sold with Martin Gouge of Charpaigne, bishop of Clermont, chancellor of the duke of Berry. Jacques de Montmorin inherits it thereafter and sells it with Jacques Cœur in 1448, for the sum of two thousand ecus gold. In 1458, with the liquidation of the goods of this last, the seigniory of Barlieu is bought by Jean V of Bueil, Count de Sancerre, and thus returns to the Comté of Sancerre, via the baronnie of Vailly. The ground of Barlieu remains in the family of Bueil until 1628, then it is acquired by Henri Bourbon II prince de Condé, governor of Berry, and remains in this family until Louise Elisabeth de Bourbon-Cop, countess of Sancerre, which dies in 1775.

From 1785, Louis XVI starting from a contract of exchange revoked by the National Assembly in 1791, becomes lord of Barlieu. Later, Barlieu is one of the seven communes of the first canton of Vailly, him even built-in with the district of Aubigny-on-Nère on November 16th, 1790. In August 1801, the village is definitively attached to the canton of Vailly.
