Barclays

Barclays is a British Banque based with London with the the United Kingdom and founded in 1896. The group is with dimensions on London Stock Exchange the index FTSE of and fact five part of the “big”, the 5 plus British large banks.

Barclays carries on its activities in more than 60 countries that it is in Europe in particular with the the United Kingdom, in Asia or in America and Africa. The group employs 111300 people in the world including 32.000 in South Africa through its new subsidiary company Absa acquired in 2005.

In 2005, Barclays is the fourteenth European Banque in term of equities.

Since 2001, it is the sponsor of the Premier league (Championship of England of football) thanks to a contract which runs at least until 2008.

History

  • 1896 : Several small London banks join to form a new bank which takes the name of Barclays & Company
    Cette news bank has 182 agencies, mainly in the east and the south-east of England

  • 1905 : Acquisition of Bolithos present in Cornouailles and the south-west of the country

  • 1918 : Fusion with London, Provincial and South Western Bank and becomes one of the “big five”

  • 1925 : International expansion: fusion of Colonial Bank , Anglo Egyptian Bank and National Bank off South Africa to form International Barclays

  • 1926 : Barclays has 1837 agencies

  • 1969: Barclays buys Martins Bank , more the British large bank having its seat out of London

  • 1986 : Barclays is the first British bank with dimensions with New York and Tokyo

  • 1997 : Development of the bank by Internet

  • 2000 : Acquisition of Woolwich Plc

  • 2001 : Becomes the official sponsor of the Championnat of England of football

  • 2003 : Acquisition of the Spanish bank Banco Zaragozano

  • 2005 : Acquisition of Absa, the first South-African bank of detail
