Barbara Kruger

Barbara Kruger , born in 1945 is a conceptual artist American.

Biography

Born in 1945 in Newark, these suburbs of New York from now on to the abandonment, Barbara Kruger worked like designer and painter for agencies of Publicité. During these track records, it was familiarized with the protocols of construction of the Image S intended for the Média S. Their codes, their signs quickly belonged to its visual vocabulary.

As of its first work S (1978), its work is characterized by its critical load. It then adapts already made images (sometimes it carries them out). Diverted of their support of origin (Magazine), those are increased with the format of the table of rest. Lastly, of the virulent Slogan S, of the stupid aphorisms, the commonplaces of our behaviors are present in the image in the form of short sentences at the austere typography. Each one questions with a certain ambiguity our capacity to answer the pressures of the company in order to reproduce a behavior standardized.

This Thought on the commun run, this thought which before any advertisement the end of any variation in our lives, this thought thus does not aim to wonder about the banality or the stereotype. On the contrary, Barbara Kruger, by reproducing on a dramatic mode the stereotypes of our Ideology, offers to the spectator of the images where the signs return to models of representation of which we are aware perfectly, of the models with which we play in a freedom always renewed buissonnière. To show the signs of alienation returns to the way in which we invent the daily newspaper with blow of tricks, easy ways and tactics of resistance.

However, the photographic tables could lead to a dead end. The esthetisation of what was denounced gave to its parts an ambivalence quickly insupportable as publicity copied and integrated many artistic procedures which initially denounced its ideology (it is enough to be convinced some to see how much television commercials singent from now on the artistic attitudes of the the Eighties).

The year 1990 constitutes a first rupture. Barbara Kruger carries out her first installation by completely adapting the space of her New Yorkean gallery. Ground with the ceiling, words and images are imbricated one in another. A certain virulence in the remarks places the spectator in a situation ambiguity, that of its own denunciation.

Today in the space of the Gallery Yvon Lambert, Barbara Kruger looks further into this work with the simultaneous projection of three Film S. Three walls separated by thin partitions face us. On each one of them, a face looks at us. Each one pronounces a monolog of an incredible violence, often built starting from heard situations. Generally, they are apostrophes intended for an interlocutor absent. Also the spectator receives it these charges: you are really too null, but for which take you you with your beautiful sentences, etc the old parts showed that in a culture modelled by information and images which hold place of reality, the man is able only of experiments of second hand. Here, Barbara Kruger proves that, in a given company, the imaginary one is not a coherent totality. He includes a galaxy of heterogeneous figures which all, thwart the models of communication preached by the media. The life of any man is not reducible indeed with a series of Stéréotype S.
