Barre Philips (born in 1934 with San Francisco) is a Contrebassiste of North-American jazz.

After having studied the Romance languages with the university of Berkeley, it settles in 1962 with New York City to study the Contrebasse with Frederick Zimmermann. Barre Philips emigrated in Europe in 1967. He lives since 1972 in the south of France.

During the years 1960 it records with in particular Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Giuffre, archie Shepp, Attila Zoller, Lee Konitz and Marion Brown.

Its recordings of 1968 in solo ( Newspaper Violone in the United States, Unaccompanied Bars in England and Basse Bar in France) are the first recordings of solo of double bass. The recording of 1971 with Dave Holland Music from Two Basses is probably the first recording of a duet of two double basses.

In the years 1970, Philips belongs to the " group; The Trio" with the saxophonist John Surman and the beater Stu Martin. In the years 1980 and 1990 he plays regularly with the " London Jazz Composers Orchestra" directed by its disciple Barry Guy. In 1991, it records with Ornette Coleman the original soundtrack of the film Naked Lunch .

Philips played with the double bass players Peter Kowald and Joelle Léandre, the guitarist Derek Bailey, the clarinettist Theo Jörgensmann, the saxophonists Peter Brötzmann, Evan Parker, Michel Doneda and Joe Maneri and the pianist Paul Bley.

Since the years 1970 it composes of the film musics for example for Jacques Rivette, Robert Kramer and of the ballet musics for Carolyn Carlson. He often worked with the singer Claudia Philips, his daughter.
