Bar Mitsva

Bar Mitsvah (Hebrew: ברמצוה , also called Jewish communion ) is a word Araméen which could mean: Wire of the Command . It is the age to which the young Jewish boy reaches his religious majority, in theory 13 years. The Bat Mitsvah is the age to which the Jewish young girl reaches her religious majority, in theory 12 years.

Actually, the word Bar means wire and the word Mitsvah , which is usually translated Good deed , means actually Commandement . That thus represents the acceptance of the commands of the boy towards God .

In the traditional communities, the religious majority of the girls is not the subject of any particular celebration.

For the boys, it is the moment when it counts like a person with whole share in the constitution of a Miniane (ten men) allowing a collective office, where it carries the accessories of prayer, Talit (shawl of prayer) and Téfiline (phylactères).

The tradition wants that these “first” are the subject of particular offices where the young boy will replace the cantor (Baal Tefilah) or the Rabbin (Rav) who leads usually the office to the Synagog. According to its capacities, it will be able to lead the totality of the office or, at least, to read in the Torah the affected passage to the week of its majority.

Today, certain communities such as the movement Reform (reformist) in the United States grant to the girls the same privileges as with the boys. Others, such as the movement Conservative (conservative) or the liberal movement in France, make it possible to the girls to achieve some rites which the orthodoxe movements continue to exclusively hold to the boys.

In the traditional communities, the young Bar Mitzvah starts to celebrate its majority the day of its 13 years in the Hébraïque calendar where it will carry for the first time the Téfiline (only days of week), and the Talit. Then, Monday or next Thursday, days of reading of the Torah to the public office, and Saturday morning for the offices of the Shabbat (Saturday), it " will assemble " with the Torah to make its reading of it. He will pronounce also a personal comment on the passage of the Torah which he read, it is the Derachah.

The office, in particular that of the morning of Chabbat, is traditionally followed of a collation, the Séouda (the prayer of the morning is, in theory, known as before the lunch). When the community celebrates a Bar Mitzvah, it is of use which the parents invite all the participants in a dresser which opens by the recitation of the Kiddouch, prayer on the wine.

The reading of the Torah is not particularly easy because the Hebrew text is written without vowels and that no error is allowed. She thus asks for either a work of memorizing or a very good knowledge of the language. Moreover, it is necessary to sing with the Téamims , kind of notes of music which indicate the intonation that one must have; those also are not written, and that increases the difficulty of reading of the parasha. The Community, and especially the parents, are proud ease with which them son ensures the reading of the Torah and the song of the prayers. The girls do not read the Torah, only one speech in which they thank their families.
