The barégeoise is an ovine race French.
Origin
It belongs to the Pyrenean races with curly wool which one finds in the central Pyrenees. It was differentiated recently from the Lourdian race by the insulation of the valley of Barèges. The herd book was created in 1975. It represents today 4.000 registered animals including 3.000 ewe and 80 rams, raised in the canton of Luz-Saint-Saver.
Morphology
It is an ovine race of intermediate size: 70 cm for 50-60 kg for the ewe and 80 cm for 75-90 kg for the ram. It carries horns in stretched spirals.La wool is white.
Aptitudes
It is a beef breed. Goes up is done in spring and the mountain pasture, giving lambs (1,3 on average) from September to March. The product of choice is the sheep which goes down again of mountain pasture in 18-20 month. It obtained the recognition of its quality by the granting of AOC Barèges-Gavarnie; this race is registered like only profiting from AOC. This sign of quality and origin with saved the race and the ancestral practice threatened by the industrial crossings and the sale of sucking lambs.La wool fine but is provided little. It however allows a good protection in the open air the mountain pasture. It is a race of high mountain, nursery school, walker and resistant. She has a good aptitude for désaisonnement.
