Banovo Brdo
Banovo Brdo , in Serb Cyrillic БановоБрдо, is a district of Belgrade, the capital of the Serbia. It is located in the municipality of Čukarica. In 2002, the local community (" mesna zajednica") of Banovo Brdo counted: 5887 inhabitants and the district of the same name, which includes several other local communities: 20976.
History
In second half of the 19th century, the writer and diplomatic Matija Ban (1818-1903) bought a field located at the site of the current district of Banovo Brdo; the name of the owner inspired that of the field which was called Banovac . This name extended then to the unit from the district which was constituted gradually on the hill around. Thus the name of Banovo Brdo means " the hill of Ban".
Characteristics
The district of Banovo Brdo extends along the street Požeška, which connects the central districts of Belgrade with the south-west of the capital and the districts of Žarkovo, Labudovo Brdo, Petlovo Brdo etc It constitutes the starting point of the axis consisted the streets Požeška and Trgovačka, which is prolonged until Ibarska magistrala (the highway of the Ibar).
Banovo Brdo is surrounded by the districts of Čukarica (in the west), of Ada Ciganlija and Careva Ćuprija (in north), of Topčider and Košutnjak (in the east) and of Žarkovo and Julino Brdo (in the south). The oriental party of Banovo Brdo is consituée of the two under-districts of Golf Naselje and Sunčana Padina.
Since the years 1980, the street Požeška became one of the most animated streets of Belgrade and one of its commercial sectors most prosperous. In fact, Banovo Brdo constitutes a city in the city, with its own pedestrian precinct, its park and its trade.
