Bandeirante

The bandeirantes are the men of ground who, as from the 17th century, penetrated inside Brazil in the search of mineral richnesses or natives to be reduced in slavery.

Forwardings of the bandeirantes were called entradas (entered) or will bandeiras (flags) this last term gave origin to the name - one holds the name of entrada to forwardings of official origin and will bandeira with that of private origin. Bandeirante from the point of view Sémantique was thus “the man who followed a Drapeau”.

Most famous, normally, were originating in São Paulo (paulists), State which before the creation of Santa Catarina extended to all the south from the country. The bandeirantes were from the ethnic point of view Portuguese downward with almost always a little indigenous interbreeding.

They were the principal craftsmen of the conquest of the interior and the increase in the territorial limits of Brazil beyond those defined by the Traité of Tordesillas - agreement between the Portugal and the Spain to define the limits between the Portuguese and Spanish possessions in the new world. The bandeirantes extended the borders of Brazil to the South, the meridian line of Tordesillas which passes to Laguna, almost until the Rio of Plata, to the West by the Mato Grosso and almost near the the Andes.

They are the persons in charge for the capture of at least 60.000 natives, died of many others and the destruction of the missions Jesuits of the Guaira, Tape and the Uruguay (current Rio Grande C Sul). However, will bandeiras them knew resistances as for example that of Pedro Leite Pais which was overcome by three hundred warriors defending the Mission Jesus Maria. The supply of firearms by the Jesuits with the Indians and a military formation allowed the Indian victory over the edges of the Rio Mboréré in 1641 on one will bandeira made up of 300 paulists and 600 Tupis.
