BancWest

BancWest is a banking group American subsidiary of French BNP Paribas, it is the larger fifth groups banking having its seat in California. BancWest carries on its activities under two names: Bank off the West in the West of the the United States and First Hawaiian Bank with Hawaii, Guam and Saipan.

History

  • 1874 : Creation of Bank off the West under the name of National Farmers Gold Bank

  • 1879: The bank changes name to become First National Bank off San Jose
  • 1970: The National Bank of Paris (BNP) created French Bank off California
  • Years 1970: First National Bank off San Jose changes her name and becomes Bank off the West
  • 1979: BNP buys Bank off the West (BW) and with French Bank off California
  • 1987 amalgamates it: BW buys off Bank Los Gatos
  • 1990: BW buys Central Banking Systems
  • 1991: BW buys 30 agencies in California of North
  • 1992: BW buys Atlantic Financial Federal Savings Bank with the Resolution Trust Corporation
  • 1993: BW buys 15 branches in California of North with Citibank
  • 1995: BW buys NorthBay Savings Bank
  • 1995: First Hawaiian created Pacific One Bank and holds 30 agencies in the Washington, the Oregon and the Idaho which it acquired at West One Bank
  • 1997: BW buys off offices with Bank America in Coast Federal Bank
  • 1998: BNP and First Hawaiian Inc., the head office of First Haiwaiian Bank and Pacific One Bank, join to create a new business under the name of BancWest Bancorp. In same time BancWest preserves the names First Hawaiian Bank and Bank off the West (which absorbed Pacific One Bank). By this fusion BNP fall to 45% from the capital and commits itself not increasing its participation in the bank before November 2001

  • 1999 : BW buys Sierra West Bancorp Western. This operation dilutes BNP with 42%

  • 2001: First Security Bancorp and Wells Fargo amalgamate. To answer antitrust American, they must separate from certain branches to the New Mexico with the Nevada which they sell in BancWest
  • 2001: First Haiwaiian Bank buys off the subsidiary companies of Union Bank California with Guam and Saipan
  • May 2001: BancWest Bancorp accepts the offer of BNP Paribas which acquires the 55% remainder of the capital of BancWest Bancorp that it does not have. By doing this it becomes a subsidiary company with 100% of BNP Paribas
  • Dec. 2001: BW buys United California Bank near UFJ Bank
  • Mar. 2004: BW buys USDB Bancorp, head office of Union Safe Deposit Bank like Community First National Bank, which has 155 agencies in 12 States: the Arizona, the California, the Colorado, the Iowa, the Minnesota, the Nebraska, the New Mexico, the North Dakota, the South Dakota, the Utah, the Wisconsin and the Wyoming
  • 2005: BancWest buys Federal Commercial Corporation for $ 1.36 billion, this one has 198 agencies in 7 States
  • 2005: After this acquisition BancWest has nearly 740 agencies and 4.2 million accounts in the United States
