Banatska Topola

Banatska Topola , in Serb Cyrillic Sr БанатскаТопола, in Hungarian hu German Töröktopolya and Sr Banat Topola, is a locality of Serbia located in the autonomous province of Voïvodine. It belongs to the municipality of Kikinda in the district of the septentrional Banat. In 2002, it counted: 1066 inhabitants, of which a majority of Serb.

Banatska Topola is officially classified among the villages of Serbia.

History

The current village was founded two hundred years ago. However, of many archaeological discoveries attest of a human presence at the end of the Bronze Age, towards: 1200 before Jesus Christ; these discoveries are preserved at the national museum of Kikinda. Others discovered attest later presence of Sarmates in the area.

During the Middle Ages, there were several localities of this area. But until the end of the 18th century, the sector was primarily marshy. In 1783, the ground was bought by the count Bogdan Karácsony which came from Novo Miloševo. The marshes were drained and the count made come from the Germanic families and Hungarian. A Roman Catholic church was built in 1899.

Serb families, coming from Bosnia-Herzégovine, intallèrent themselves in the village in 1946.
