Baní

Baní is a city of the south of the Dominican Republic, capital of the province of Peravia. The city has a population of 107.926 inhabitants (61.864 in urban area and 46.062 in rural area) and is built on the river of the same name, surrounded by the rivers Nizao and Ocoa .

The November 22nd of each year, the inhabitants celebrate Nuestra Señora de Regla , holy-owner of the city.

History

The city took its name of a Cacique called Paní , which in indigenous language meant abundance out of water . Baní was founded the March 3rd 1664 by the Spanish captain Manuel of Azlor there Urries . This one bought the grounds of cacic of Maguana for 300 pesos with Anna de Peravia .

In 1805, the General Dessalines set fire to the city. Rebuilt partly, it is in 1810 that his first town hall there is set up.

During the reign of Rafael Trujillo, the city was a commune of the province of Trujillo , (today San Cristóbal), then the area was declared province Jose Trujillo Valdéz , the November 21st 1945, to be called today Peravia.

Economy

The commercial main activity of agricultural the east city of order, in the area one produces especially vegetables (Tomate, Oignon, etc), fruits and Café. The fishing gets also some incomes with the inhabitants, but it is especially industry salt box, activity agro-industrial, which tends to develop thanks to the Salines all close relations.
