Balthasar Bebel

Balthasar Bebel was born in October 1632 with Strasbourg and died the November 2nd 1686 with Wittenberg.

Its family

Balthasar Bebel is the son of Balthasar Bebel, Master-baker of Strasbourg, originating in Göppingen and Susanna Rheinthaller, born in 1606 in Strasbourg, but downward of a family of the middle-class of Nuremberg on the side of his/her father and Alsatian surgeons on the side of his mother. The brother-in-law of our Balthasar Bebel, Hans Heinrich Baumann, is him-also besides surgeon and its nephew, Balthasar Baumann, will be surgeon in Alsace.

Bebel studies at the university of Leipzig, where it acquires a control. April 20th, 1658, it leaves Leipzig for the Université of Wittenberg where it is then allowed as Master attending the faculty of philosophy in March 1659. In 1661, it returns in its birthplace and is named preacher initially with Saint Pierre-the-Young person, then with the cathedral of Strasbourg like professor of antiquity crowned at the university of Strasbourg.

In 1662, he is Doctor of Divinity and is named professor with the faculty of theology. He refuses many of other offers to go to teach in various universities.

When in 1686, the succession of the theologist Abraham Calov, very famous orthodoxe Lutheran, are offered to him, it agrees to go to Université of Wittenberg. Strasbourg has been then a French city for four years, and the cathedral was restored with the catholic clergy, which is undoubtedly not without influence on its decision. It starts to teach on September 29th, 1686 while acting as general superintendent of the church of the center of the city. It will fulfill however these functions only very little of time, since it is carried by an brain attack a few weeks later.
