Balsam of Canada
The balsam of Canada , also called terpentine of Canada or gum of fir tree , is a Térébenthine resulting from the resin of the Sapin balsam tree.
The resin, dissolved in essential oils, is viscous, sticking and colorless (sometimes yellowish) after evaporation of essential oils.
Thanks to its great quality of transparency and with its Index of refraction (1,55) near to that to the Glass, this balsam is especially used in Optique to join objects of glass in some prisms or Polariseur S. It is soluble in the Xylène, Amorphe when it is dried, and it Cristal dye stick not with the age.
It is also used:
- in Biology to preserve samples of Microscopy,
- for to repair cracks on glass (like Windshield),
- in Oil-base paint.
