Balmberg

The Balmberg is a Col of mountain Suisse.

Geography

The collar of Balmberg is located on the territory of the commune soleuroise of Balm EIB Günsberg and is presented in the form of a Cirque rock made up of forests and pastures. The Sigger takes its source there.

The road of the collar connects the communes of Welschenrohr to north and Günsberg to the south.

History

The mountain is colonized since the 16th century, mainly by stockbreeders of mountain pasture. One extracted there the Gypsum between until the 19th century.

The road of the collar is mentioned since 1574 and subjected to Péage in 1703. It is refitted on the way cantonal between 1898 and 1900, then renovated between 1936 and 1941.

Economy

Six formageries of mountain pasture are indexed on the mountain at the 19th century and, nowadays, one counts there three farms and two more exploitations of estivage. At the base of Balmberg opens an establishment of cure at the beginning of the 20th century, taken again like convalescent home in 1920 by the sickness insurances of the canton of Soleure.

A hearth of children and a school of altitude are is also built at the top as of 1922. Lastly, a vacation center is built in 1960, used today to accommodate request asylums.
