Ballet of the XXe century

Founded with Brussels in 1960 by Maurice Béjart, the Ballet of the 20th century was, until in 1987, the official company of ballet of the Théâtre of the Currency in Belgium.

Histoirique of the Ballets

In 1959, the director of the Currency, Maurice Huisman, programmed eight evenings of Ballet, from December 8th to 15th, during which follow one another the Ballet of the royal Theater of the Currency, the Ballet of Milorad Miskovitch, the Western Theater Ballet and the Ballet-Theater of Maurice Béjart, accompanied by the Orchestra of the “TRM”. Béjart gives to it for the first time its Rite of Spring . Huisman had been impressed by Arcane (II) , ballet that Béjart had shown in September 1958 during the World Fair. the Sacring is a triumph and Huisman decides to associate this thirty year young person with the destiny of the Opera of Brussels.

In 1987, in dissension with the director of the Currency, Gerard Mortar, it leaves in full international round the Bruxelloise institution, dissolved the Ballets of the 20th century, and founds less than six weeks later with Lausanne which accommodates it from now on, the Béjart Ballet Lausanne. The school of dance Mudra attached to the Ballet of the 20th century is also closed and Béjart opens a new school which he baptized Rudra.
