Toponymy

Balledent, village where one had the tooth. “To ball tooth” of the old French verb also existing in the occitan “to ball”, dance, meant to burst hunger. The ground was so poor and so difficult to cultivate that the famished peasants had given this name to their village. It is one of some villages and localities of France of which the name, created and transmitted by the " small gens" (popular etymology), is related on the hardness of its ground for the peasants or to the production of icelle like Rompéchine in Charente, Bapaume in the Pas-de-Calais, Bramefaim in the the Limousin also, Bréviandes in Champagne-Ardenne and various communes with the name resulting from the same root, or Make fun-Barrel in Touraine among a multitude of others…
