Bakou

Bakou (Azerbaijani: Russian Bakı, : Баку Persan Bakou , : باکو Bakou ) is the capital of the Azerbaïdjan. It is in the east of the country, on southern bank of the peninsula of Abṣeron, at the edge of the Caspian Sea. Its history goes up until the 1st millenium before Jesus Christ, but the hard copies oldest date only from the 5th century. According to the census of 2003, it counts 1  900  000 inhabitants. 3 million people approximately lives in the agglomeration, because in particular of the great number of refugees and moved internal of the war of the Haut-Karabagh. It gained in 2003 the official title of city more punt in the world. It is candidate with the Olympic organization of the Games 2016.

Town planning

The center of Bakou east made up of the strengthened old city which was registered with the tower of the virgin (Qiz Qalasi) and the palate of Shirvanshahs to the World heritage of UNESCO in December 2000, becoming thus the first place of Azerbaïdjan to being registered with the World heritage. The streets are twisted there and narrow; some yet were not completely rehabilitated and given in state, those which are it have sometimes sudden so energetic restorations which it becomes difficult to find the " old woman ville" …

The boomtown , in the south of the old city, was established after the massive oil exploitation started at the beginning of the 20th century. It is characterized by an architecture concerned with the fine arts, with a checkerboard plan.

The modern city extends out of the walls of the old city. Its streets and its buildings rise to the top of the hills which border bay of Bakou.

The agglomeration of Bakou is divided into 11 districts (Azizbayov, Binagadi, Garadagh, Narimanov, Nasimi, Nizami, Sabail, Sabunchu, Khatai, Surakhany and Yasamal) and 48 communes.

Administration

Education

As a center of education of Azerbaijan, Bakou counts many schools and universities. After Azerbaïdjan gained its independence, the fall of Communism allowed the development of many private institutions. Bakou also lodges the founded Academy of Science of Azerbaïdjan in 1945.

Sports

Bakou is candidate with the organization of the Olympic Games of summer of 2016.
