Old story
The origins of the town of Bailleul go back to highest Antiquity: Mayer and Grammaye says that it was rested by a Belgian colony of driven out Bavay at the time when Jules César fought battle to the Nerviens. The situation of this city on the way that the Romans had traced between Cassel and Wervik appears to give to this legend a bottom of truth; there is, of the remainder, found, at the time of excavations in Gravensberg, of the traces of fortifications and the medals to the effigy of the emperors Nerva, Trajan and Domitien. Other historians think that the founder of Bailleul is a captain of the Cattes, Germanic tribe, being called Belem. It is him which would have given its name to the city.
The city was destroyed by the Francs into 420 and remained uninhabited during two centuries, until the moment when, in 621, Lydéric, named by large Dagobert " forestier" from Flanders (in fact governor, this term used by the historians would be due to a mistranslation), " destroyed the wild animals and repopulated the pays".
Bailleul was already known time of the Morins, the history of the foundation of the vault of Gravensberg containing these words: " SACELLUM IN ASSEMBLES COMITIS JUXTA BALLIOLUM IN TERRA MORINENSI".
It is to be believed that this country was inhabited by Cattes of which Katsberg (Mont of Cats) and the mount Cassel retained the name. A battle given by Godoald, captain of Cattes, take place at a place now called Godewaersvelde, of Godoaldsveld , is in French " the field of Godoald".
It seems that the first Seigneurs of Bailleul were the first counts de Flandre. Lydéric, then its Engelrand successors and Odoacer.
In IXe century, Charles II the Bald person made strengthen the towns of Flanders by the Count Baudouin I {{er}} Arm wrestling, which constuisit the castle-extremely of Bailleul. The Normands were initially pushed back by the crowd galvanized by Baudouin having taken the head of the engagements, but the Norman ones returned more numerous and destroyed the castle in 882.
The peace signed into 912 with Saint-Clearly-on-Epte between Rollon and Charles the Simple one brought back peace in our area: the city was rebuilt, on all sides one lives to rise constructions and agriculture became flourishing.
Baudouin the Young person in 948, Arnould the Old man and Robert the Clippings in 1072, counts de Flandre, strengthened Bailleul, surrounded it by palisades and named ditches stadgrachten . These ditches started, on the one hand, to the street of Cassel, between the street of the College and the street of Occident and went in straight line until current Place of the Cardinal Liénart, while passing by the dead end Saint Amand. The current street of the old post office to the horses is also old a stadtgracht.
One sees appearing about the year thousand, whereas the count Baudouin IV Beautiful-Bores organizes the châtellenies, the family Van Belle (or of Bailleul ), lords of Bailleul who had the title and exerted the jurisdiction of Viscounts.
Arnould the Graminaceous ones which lived into 980 married Plectrude, girl of Eripand, lord de Fauquemberg, of which it had two wire: Hubert and Simon. This last was lord of the manor of Bailleul and taken the name of its châtellenie. He lived in 1062. Simon have his woman, the girl of Geoffroy, lord de Melvalle, two wire: Beaudouin I of Bailleul, lord of the manor, and Albert. Both left to the first crusade in 1096, Albert died in Palestine in 1098.
In 1187, Baudouin III of Bailleul, about to leave for the Holy Land made gift with leprous of Ypres of diz razières of wheat. Then, it gave them ten others of them to take on the income of the mill which it had in Bailleul. When it took the cross to go out of Holy Land, he was the captain of the bodyguard of the Count de Flandre. He died the same year.
The city was annexed in France after the Traité of Nimègue in 1678 which was confirmed by the Paix of Utrecht in 1713.

Fires, the Beautifulone
The city was destroyed many times in the past, in particular by the Francs, the Viking S and in 1213, the prince Louis (the future Louis VIII). It undergoes many fires among which the famous Beautiful-Brant . It is the last fire which touched Bailleul, on May 8th, 1681: it destroyed the city almost very whole: the belfry, the Hotel-of-City, the churches Vaast Saint and of the Jesuits, convents of the Black Sisters, the Gray Sisters, of the Capuchins and the Jesuits, 488 houses, 14 breweries, 8 spinning frames and of enormous quantities of goods of all kinds: there were twenty-three victims. This fire, of accidental cause, started in a brewery of the street of Ypres, is described in the Flemish poetry of Despringer , entitled " Beautiful-Brand" Den;. After this disaster, the Magistrate of Bailleul, to cure the frequent fires, favoured by the thatched roofings, made allocate a premium with those which covered their houses out of slate or tile, and which built into hard.
Modern history
Bailleul, located not far from Cassel where Foch had established its general headquarter, was completely destroyed in 1918 by the allies, with the support of the British aviation which sought to drive out the enemy who had taken the city. This is why, as most of the department it was classified in red zone. In November 1918, only one house was still upright, and today only the Gothic room at the base of the Beffroi remains of this time. The current Savings bank is the certified copy of the oldest dwelling of Bailleul, of the 16th century, at the time of the destruction. Among the after-effects of war, tens of thousands of not exploded ammunition or not drawn had to be extracted the ground of the city and the surroundings, before being by the English bomb disposal experts destroyed on the spot or exported (where?) to allow the rebuilding and the setting in culture. These ammunition was and is still an important source of pollution (cf mercury of the starters, Picric acid, and others Nitrate S entering their composition), it is with the lack of coal and paper and bituminized paperboard, the first problem quoted by the mayors at the end of 1918 and at the beginning of 1919 at the time of the beginning of the rebuilding which will take more than 10 years.
