History
As soon as they had conquered the Mediterranean part of Gaulle (120-118 av. J.C.), the Romans organized the province known as “Narbonnese” (of the Alps in the Pyrenees). They created in particular celebrates it Domitienne way. It is with less than 2 km of this road - it passed to the site of Déméter - which a Romain named Ballius made build a “villa”, vast house with dependences, in a great agricultural domain. With the passing of years, the villa became a village and its name evolved/moved until becoming Baillargues here a few centuries. The first mention of our village is reproduced on a document gone back to 819 by which the Emperor Louis says “Débonnaire” yielded to the bishop of Maguelone the suzerainty of the grounds of Baillargues.
The Romance church Saint-Julien
The Romance church of Saint-Julien de Baillargues was built in the center of the oldest part of the village, undoubtedly in XIIe century. It was strengthened in XVe century to protect the inhabitants from the small troops of soldiers who, without employment, during the interruptions of the war known as of “Hundred years” plundered the country. This work of setting in defense left quite visible traces: frontage flanked of two turns, remainders of machicolation at the top of the frontage and the bell-tower, loopholes on the bedside, etc
The maintenance of the church caused some concern with the inhabitants. The heavy semi-circular vault, built out of stone, was weakened by the spacing of the side walls due to its push, the infiltrations coming from the roof degraded it so much so that in 1760 it had to be replaced by the current groined vault. Less esthetic but lighter (one built it out of brick), it spares the whole of the building.
At the XIXe century, the growth of the population required an enlarging of the church. One obtained it by building, by stages, 4 side chapels. The presence of relieving arches in the walls made it possible to build them without making an attempt on the solidity of the unit. Very recently, of important work consolidated the high parts of the building and discreetly renovated outside. It only remains to rehabilitate the interior with the same care so that the church of Baillargues makes honor at the village.
Strengthened an in the past village
The strengthened village (in XIIè and XIIIè centuries) occupies old a castrum.
The setting in defense of the church, undoubtedly considered to be quickly insufficient, was supplemented by an enclosure about rectangular, likely to discourage a troop of summarily armed attackers.
This enclosure surrounding the group of the houses closest to the church forms the historical heart of the village.
There remain about it thick walls, a tower of angle and a monumental door, formed of two Roman arches separated by a machicolation, which constituted the main entrance of the “city”.
In addition to this door, there existed initially two other doors which were destroyed.
The One hundred year old war having taken end, the population increased and of new houses were built out of the ramparts, component of the suburbs which did not cease extending.
