Bagno di Romagna

Bagno di Romagna is a common of the Province of Forlì-Césène in the area Emilie-Romagna in Italy.

Geography

The city is in the valley of Savio, at an altitude of 491 meters, 49 km of Césène and to 65 km of Forlì. It is also located on the way of A45 of Ravenne at Rome, a few km before entering in Toscane (this way is not a highway, but a fast track of State, badly maintained (of very many holes), speed limited to 90 and presence of automatic radars). The city is crossed by the river Savio.

History

Its development, like the major part of the countries of Apennin Tuscan-émilien, underwent booms alternating with successive abandonments. The first traces of installations go back to the Bronze Age, as shows it the discovery of jewels and the archaeological excavations carried out in the zones bordering on Rio Salso and Selvapiana. The first boom occurred during the Roman Empire with the increase in the population resident in the center close to Sarsina, the construction of an effective system of transportation routes which connected it to the town of Césène and the contiguous valleys of the Ombrie and the river Bidente, and realization of the first Balneum around whose developed then Bagno di Romagna . But to the fall of the Empire corresponded with that of Bagno which it was destroyed by the Goths into 540.

With the black years of the the Middle Ages, appears the historical lack of documentation which we could associate with a progressive depopulation and an impoverishment of the Valley of the Savio. We start again to have information only in the first decades of the 9th century with the presence of a church dedicated to Sainte Maria and a document authorizing the foundation of a monastery Benedictine in the vicinity.

The country takes again its rise around the crowned complex and a certain peace established under the domination of powerful the Famille Guidi which at the end of the 14th century has many boroughs and castles in Apennin Tuscan-émilien. It is during this time that Bagno di Romagna is strengthened and equipped with walls of enclosure, and a trade of goods developed in the fraction of San Piero in Bagno . Bagno di Romagna becomes an important center of passage to the doors of the Romagna (Italy) for those which come from the Toscane or the close Ombrie or for those of the Plaine of Po which want to reach the valleys of the the Apennines. At the end of the domination of the Guidi at the 15th century, Bagno becomes territory of Florence and it will remain there with the passage to the Grand-Duchy of Tuscany until 1860, the trade develops and the activity of agriculture and breeding of the sheep leaves the place to the craft industry able to produce rosaries and buttons out of wooden exported in any Italy.

With the Unit of Italy, Bagno di Romagna is in the territories of the Area of Tuscany, but in 1923, following displacements of the regional borders wanted by Mussolini (the source of the Tevere was to be born in Romagna), belonged to the Province of Forlì-Césène and thus of the Emilie-Romagna.
