In French Guiana, the bagasse is a large tree pioneer of the family of the Moraceae:

Bagassa guianensis J.B. Aublet

Taxonomic synonymy:

  • Bagassa sagotiana Office ex Bentham and J.D. Hooker
  • Bagassa tiliifolia (W. Hamilton) R. Benoist
  • Laurea tiliifolia C. Gaudichaud-Bowsprit
  • Piper tiliifolium N.A. Desvaux

This forest gasoline produces a imputréscible gilded yellow wood resembling the Iroko of Africa, very appreciated for interior and external uses. It is also used for the construction of dugouts. In Guyana, the exploitation of this species, relatively not very common in forest, is regulated by ONF because she is regarded as a key species because of her fructification at against-season which makes it possible to nourish a great number of animals.

Experimental plantations were installation by the ONF and CIRAD to study its culture.

Studies are in hand with the L3MA (Laboratory “Materials and Molecules in Amazonian Medium”) on its chemistry and its imputrescibility.
