Bag of Béziers
The bag of Béziers remained sadly celebrates in the French history.
It is at the time of the catch of Béziers by the first Albigensian Crusade, in 1209, that the chief of the Crusade, Arnaud Amaury (or Arnaud Amalric), pontifical legate and abbot of Cîteaux, declared, according to the chronicler cistercian Césaire de Heisterbach: “Massacre them, because the lord knows to them his”, that the historiographic tradition transmitted to us in the form slightly modified of “Kill to them all, God will recognize to them his”. This quotation is largely subjected to guarantee: only Césaire, a German monk of the Cistercian abbey of Heisterbach, affirms it in its collection Dialogs of the miracles writes between 1219 and 1223, whereas the local sources do not blow mot. of them.
This catch and this bag of the city had been decided by the Abbot of Citeaux because the consuls of the city had refused to deliver the 223 heretics denounced by the local bishop, Renaud de Montpeyroux. Indeed the Consuls of the city (or capitouls) declared: “we prefer being drowned in the sea salted rather than to deliver our fellow-citizens”.
The chroniclers estimate the number of dead between 15.000 and 22.000, is more half of the population of the city. The massacre of the town of Béziers entered the history under the name of large masèl (great butchery in occitan).
