Badniak

Badniak is, at the Slaves south, a character of Christmas, spirit of the log, stock or connects that one burns the night preceding the festival by Koleda (also called Badni Vetcher).

With this log, misfortunes, the impure thoughts, the not exaucés wishes, the diseases of the previous year are too flarings them. " The best is with venir" , with the air to say Badniak that the Slavic old ones imagined like a bearded old man, making a merry wink since fire or the hearth.

When Badniak burns, one throws in his fire money, corn seeds, flour, salt, wine and oil and one asks him to bring abundance in the house, of beautiful harvests and the development of the herds. The rite is followed of a family feast. Badniak, symbol of the last year, are the opposite of Bojitch, symbol of the year which arrives.

This tradition was recovered by orthodoxe Christianity in the Balkans. Christmas Eve is called Badni Vetcher and the day of Christmas Koleda .
