Badegoulien

The Badegoulien is a material culture lithic Paléolithique superior corresponding to the old denomination “old Magdalénien”. It clearly is different from Magadalénien strictly speaking from the technical point of view (cutting up of glare S) and typological (abundance of the Grattoir S and the antiquated tools, scarcity of the gravers and the plates with back).

Chronology and surface of distribution

Badegoulien is located chronologically between 19.000 BP and 17.000 BP. It is attested on the whole of the free-Cantabric zone, and as far as Switzerland and Germany.

Regional facies

The recent research undertaken by multidimentionnelle analysis highlighted a geographical variability of Badegoulien:
  • Mediterranean facies with scrapers, improved blades and antiquated tools;
  • Cantabric facies with notches and dentils, scrapers, gravers and improved blades;
  • Aquitanian facies, in which a structuring in two chronological phases is observed:
    • old phase with notch-dentils, borers and nozzles, and gravers transverse;
    • recent phase with abundant scrapers.

Principal sites

The sites of reference of Badegoulien are primarily located in the south-western quarter of France: Laugerie-high Is and Badegoule (old excavations) in the Dordogne, Cassegros, Pégourié and Peyrugues in Quercy (Batch and Lot-et-Garonne) and in the open air in the Gironde with Casevert, Bertonne, Maubin, Birac and Houleau. It is also present in stratigraphy at the Fritsch shelter in the center of France, at the Round of Barry and Blot in Auvergne. It is announced in Languedoc-Roussillon to Bize, Camparnaud, Lassac and the River, in a stopwatch-stratigraphic context remaining to define precisely.

Industries of some laminated sites " of référence" remain unfortunately still new nearly 20 years after their excavations, like Cuzoul with Vers (Batch; excavations J. Clottes), the shelter Pan in Eyzies de Tayac (the Dordogne; excavations T. Aubry), Jamblancs with Bayac (the Dordogne; excavations J.J. Cleyet-Merle), in spite of shy persons scattered and partial technological analyzes.

Badegoulien is represented in Mediterranean Spain in Parpallo, and in Cantabres in Riera, el Cierro, el Castillo, Cova Rosa, Cueto of Mina, Lloseta, Rascaño and Las Caldas.
