Bad Sulza (concentration camp)

The concentration camp of Bad Sulza functioned between October 1933 and on August 1st 1937 in an old thermal town hall of Bad Sulza, located in the Land of Thuringe.

The camp was financed until July 1st, 1936 by the Land of Thuringe. It is the Minister of Interior Department of this Land which was responsible for the camp and which signed the orders of internment. The commander of the camp was the police officer Carl Haubenreisser. The command concerned the police force of the Land indeed whereas the guard was ensured by SA.

Starting from July 1st, 1936, the camp of Bad Sulza concerned the Inspection the concentration camps and its financing ensured by the Reich. The guard was then taken of load by the S. The commander was then Albert Sauer which will direct later the camp of Mauthausen.

Approximately 850 people on the whole were interned in the camp (some were it on several occasions, this is why the numbers of prisoners go up to approximately 1.000). They worked for the majority in a career.

July 9th, 1937 the prisoners of Bad Sulza were transferred to the camp from Lichtenburg.
