Back of Mayo
Dos of Mayo (in French May Two ) is, with Tres of Mayo , the most famous table of the Spanish painter Francisco Goya.
This table, painted in 1814, is also called the Load of the Mamelouks . It represents a scene taking place the May 2nd 1808 with Madrid, at the time of a revolt against Joseph Bonaparte, brother of Napoleon Bonaparte. This one, to invade the Portugal, had occupied Spain in 1808, constrained the king of Spain to abdicate, then given its throne to his/her Joseph brother, who then becomes king d' Espagne (under the name of Joseph I).
On this table, the Spanish insurrectionists attack Mamelukes, Egyptian mercenaries combatant at the sides of the French army . The Spaniards are with ground whereas the French Army is on large horses what still shows the inequality. This revolt is crushed in blood by the occupying army.
It should be noted that Goya did not attend a scene such as this one: it painted it according to testimonys which it heard on this subject. He thus wanted to pay homage to resistant Spanish.
