Bachelor off Civil Law
The term of Bachelor off Civil Law (abbrégé in BCL or B.C.L.) indicates a series of Diplôme S of Droit in the anglophone or Anglo-Saxon countries.
It was, at the origin, a diploma of second cycle ( Postgraduate ) of the universities of Oxford and of Cambridge but today, many universities offer this dipôme in end first cycle ( graduate ). The concept of Civil law ( civil law ) was not, at the origin, opposed to the concept of Common law (jurisprudential right) but to that of the Canon law. However, certain anglophone universities always decree the original shape of this diploma.
Diploma of second cycleAt the university of Oxford, the Bachelor off Civil Law is a diploma of second cycle in English Droit, equivalent with the Master off Laws of the others British universities. The diploma of first cycle in right is, as for him, the Bachelor off Arts in Jurisprudence , equivalent with the Bachelor off Laws .
The faculty of civil law ( Faculty off Civil Law ) of the Université of Oxford bears this name to distinguish it from the canonical faculty of Droit ( Faculty off Canon Law ) which was abolished by the king Henri VIII in 1535. The program of this formation was only composed of Roman Civil law until the establishment of the pulpit of English right ( Vinerian Professorship in English Law ) in 1758.
The faculty of civil law ( Faculty off Civil Law ) of the Université of Cambridge was re-elected in Faculty of Law ( Faculty off Laws ) after the introduction of teaching of the British Common law to the 19th century. The postgraduate dismantles in this faculty, retitled LLB, is now titled LLM. The Bachelor off Civil Law of the Université of Durham also carries the title of LLM .
